How to Dry Delicata Seeds

Enjoy sweet and creamy Delicata Winter Squash every autumn and winter by saving and drying seeds. One of the most rewarding things about gardening is growing fruits and vegetables to eat. Delicata Winter Squash is an oblong yellow and green striped squash which tastes similar to sweet potato, according to the University of Illinois Extension. These vines can grow in most climates and beginning gardeners can easily grow them as long as they have a large area for the plant to spread.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your Delicata Winter Squash under the faucet in your kitchen especially if it is grown at home. You want to clean off any soil or unwanted debris. Wipe dry with a kitchen towel.

    • 2

Place your Delicata on a cutting board and cut it half lengthwise with a knife. Remove all the seeds with a metal spoon and put them into a bowl.

    • 3

Soak the seeds in the bowl by adding water. Remove any flesh from the seeds with your fingers. Pour the bowl into a fine sieve. Pull off any remaining flesh to thoroughly clean the seeds.

    • 4

Place the seeds onto three sheets of paper towels on your counter to dry. After approximately one hour, turn all the seeds over. Change the paper towels if they are still very wet. Allow to dry completely for 24 hours.

    • 5

Write "Delicata" on a brown paper lunch bag. Put the dry seeds into the bag. Tie a twist tie or a rubber band around the opening. Store in a cool dry place, such as the back of your cupboard. The Delicata seeds are good for up to six years.
