How to Grow Cassava From Root

Cassava is a root vegetable that's also known as yuca or tapioca -- as in the pudding -- which is a major food source in some tropical countries. To grow cassava from its root, you need to find a tuber that already has sprouted a stem; you can then take cuttings from the stem and plant them.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the stem from the cassava root. Store the stem in a cool, dry place for about 10 days.

    • 2

Cut 6-inch segments of stem that each include at least one bud.

    • 3

Make sure your cassava bed has loose, moist soil, then form the soil into 6- to 10-inch-high ridges in rows approximately 1 yard apart.

    • 4

Plant your stem cuttings upright in the ridges, roughly a yard apart. You should bury about half of the piece and pat down the soil around the stem.

    • 5

Weed for about six weeks, and water as necessary. The new cassava root tubers can be harvested after about 10 months, and kept in the soil for up to 18 months.
