Place a 20- to 30-gallon Smart Pot in an area with full exposure to the sun. Fill the Smart Pot with an organically rich, prepackaged potting mix, leaving 4 to 6 inches of room between the soil level and the top of the pot. Water the pot thoroughly and allow it to drain completely.
Dig a hole in the center of the smart pot to accommodate the persimmon's root ball. Place the soil to the side. Plant the persimmon in the hole so that the tree is about the same height as it was in the pot. Refill the hole with the soil and gently pack it down. Add a 3-inch layer of mulch to the top of the soil to help retain moisture.
Check the persimmon tree regularly and water when the top of the soil is dry. Prune the persimmon back to the three to five strongest branches, if you wish to trim it to a tree form. Continue to trim the tree regularly after fruiting -- fruits are formed at the end of branches and long branches can become brittle when laden with fruit.
