Information on Growing Kandy King Sweet Corn

A short-season sweet corn variety, Kandy King matures quickly and is perfect in regions with growing seasons less than three or four months. The yellow kernels, arranged in 12 to 18 rows, line the long, straight cobs.
  1. Time Frame

    • Kandy King sweet corn is not tolerant of frost. Sow seeds 1 inch deep when the last spring frost date has passed and soil temperatures are at least 50 degrees. From sowing to cob harvest, 73 days is required.

    Growing Considerations

    • For healthiest plant development, Kandy King sweet corn needs a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in a location that receives at least 10 hours of direct sunlight daily. Improve fertility and texture of soil prior to planting by incorporating organic matter into the soil.

    Concerns

    • This sweet corn cultivar is somewhat susceptible to Stewart's bacterial wilt disease. A garden free of corn flea beetles diminishes exposure to the disease-causing bacteria. According to Cornell University, if your seedlings survive past the five-leaf stage, the disease, if present, likely won't affect the later corn cob development and quality.
