How to Plant Ruby Queen Hybrid Corn

Ruby Queen hybrid corn is a red variety of sweet corn that retains its color even after being cooked. This plant has a gestation period of 75 days and will need a little extra care to ensure a fruitful harvest. Corn, regardless of the variety, has similar needs and planting requirements. It should be noted that corn varieties will cross-pollinate in some circumstances and different varieties should be planted at least 6 feet apart to avoid this issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Wait until the soil is warm enough for the seed. Cold soil temperatures will keep corn seeds from germinating properly and can spoil the entire crop. Ideally, the soil should be at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit for sweet corn. For this variety, it is best to wait until soil temperatures are around 60 to 65 degrees. Planting should also be done after all danger of frost is gone.

    • 2

Fertilize the soil. Ruby Queen hybrid corn, like all corn varieties, needs a lot of nitrogen in the soil to grow properly. Without this essential nutrient, plants will not reach their maximum potential and may not produce ears of corn. Use a commercial fertilizer intended for corn, or you can also till in fresh manure. Allow at least four days for the fertilizer to leach into the soil before planting.

    • 3

Till up the soil. In order for tender new plant roots to take hold, they must be planted in soft soil. Tilling helps break apart hard, dry soil and makes it more receptive to plant seeds.

    • 4

Plant the seeds to the appropriate depth. If your soil is still on the cooler side -- closer to 60 degrees or below -- plant the seeds approximately 1/2 inch deep. If the soil is warmer, plant the seeds to a depth of 1 to 1 1/2 inches. The corn plants should be spaced at least 8 to 9 inches apart. Lightly cover the seeds with soil after they are planted.

    • 5

Lightly water the soil. You don't want to soak the soil and wash the seeds away. A good light spray will help the soil get moist enough to aid in germination. The soil will need to be lightly watered on a daily basis until your seedlings begin to show.

Water regularly after germination. Corn is made up largely of water, and this is a thirsty plant. After it is fully established and seedlings are at least 3 inches high, water daily until the soil is dark and wet.
