Hybrid Corn Seeds

Corn is a warm-season crop that is commonly grown in home gardens. Long, hot summers allow gardeners to plant more than one crop per year. Hybrid corn seeds allow the development of many different types of corn like sweet and bicolor.
  1. Statistics

    • Hybrid corn seed produces more corn during the growing season in the U.S. since the 1930s. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service, 95 percent of corn planted is hybrid corn seeds.

    Benefits

    • Hybrid corn seeds allows for a corn crop that is genetically designed to withstand bad weather, drought, insect infestation and plant disease infection. Hybrid seeds produce more corn that is higher in quality than open pollinated corn.

    Warning

    • This type of corn will cross-pollinate with common, open-pollinated corn. This results in field corn production, which is tougher than straight hybrid corn. Plant different corn types 700 feet apart to ensure isolation of corn varieties.
