How to Grow Corn in Your Grass

Corn is a structural plant because it is so tall and therefore makes an ideal plant to have along walls or at the back of borders. As well as looking good, it is edible and delicious. It is not necessary to dig a bed for planting corn as it can simply be planted in a row in the grass. Mix in corn with sunflowers to create a beautiful backdrop in your garden.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant corn in an area of your yard where it won't block the sun for other plants located nearby. For this reason it is best to choose a north-facing plot in which to plant your seeds.

    • 2

Sow corn seeds about three to four inches apart. It is necessary to plant several rows of corn in one place for the best growth as this allows for cross-pollination. The rows should be around 25 inches apart.

    • 3

Dig several thin trenches in the grass about 1 inch deep in the plot you have allocated for your corn. Sprinkle in some compost or well-fertilized soil to the trenches to ensure the growing conditions for the corn seeds are good.

    • 4

Thin out the corn seedlings when they have started to sprout. To do this, pull them out with your fingers and discard. Having been planted around four inches apart, they should be thinned to around 12 inches apart. This prevents overcrowding that can prohibit growth.

    • 5

Add some nitrogen to the soil when the corn plants have reached approximately knee height. This aids their growth. You can add mulch such as tree bark between the plants to keep weed growth down and raise the temperature of the bed slightly.

    • 6

Harvest the corn when the ears are filled and a milky liquid escapes when a kernel is pierced with a knife.
