How to Harvest Ear Corn

Corn is a fast-growing crop, with sweet varieties becoming ready for harvest only 60 days after planting. Picking the corn at the right time and utilizing the proper methods ensures maximum flavor and sweetness.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch the silk on the ears of the corn. When the silk around the husk is dried and brittle, the ears of corn are becoming ready for harvest.

    • 2

Wait for ears to fill out. When the husks look full, begin checking ears for signs of ripeness by touching the ends of ears. The ear should feel curved or blunted at the tip, as opposed to pointed.

    • 3

Peel back enough of the husk to reveal several kernels. The kernels should be white or pale yellow in color. If the liquid inside the kernel is cloudy and whitish in color when you squeeze, ears are ready for harvest.

    • 4

Plan to harvest corn in the early morning, when the sugars in sweet ears of corn are highest.

    • 5

Take hold of an ear of corn firmly in your dominant hand and push downward forcefully. Twist the ear and pull it and it will come right off the stalk.
