How to Grow Corn in a Container

Today cornfields are huge and mostly farmed by conglomerates. However, even the smallest garden can produce some golden ears of corn. Growing corn doesn't have to just take place in large cornfields because you can grow your own corn in a container.

Things You'll Need

  • Corn seeds
  • Six to eight 12-inch containers
  • Container garden soil
  • Warm days and nights

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a large container that is at least 12 inches wide and over 12 inches deep. You'll need to purchase several because only about four corn plants grow in a 12-inch garden pot.

    • 2

Buy container garden soil to help the corn plants retain moisture. Container gardens lose moisture quickly and nutrients leach out frequently. Add in some fish emulsion or other all-purpose fertilizer for better and quicker growth.

    • 3

Find corn seeds at local greenhouses, home and garden stores and some discount department stores. You can also search at online retail garden stores for specialty corn such as popcorn, flint corn or other ornamental corn.

    • 4

Space the corn seeds 4 to 6 inches apart to discourage disease. Corn plants also need space to grow and produce ears. Sow about 6 to 8 containers each with 4 corn seeds,

    • 5

Plant the corn. Place the corn seeds on top of the soil. Push the corn seeds into the soil about an inch to discourage birds and other wildlife from eating them.

    • 6

Place the containers about 5 to 6 inches from each other. Space these containers into 2 rows or more to help maximize ear production.

    • 7

Keep the corn watered especially during the hotter summer months. As with any garden, moisture is easily lost during these hot periods of weather.

    • 8

Mulch around the corn to hold in moisture. Use wood chips, newspaper or grass clippings to help prevent moisture loss. Mulch also keeps weeds to a minimum.
