Growing Corn Indoors

Growing corn indoors is challenging but not impossible. While corn does do better when grown outdoors, the idea of being able to grown corn in your home has a certain appeal. Being able to grow something with your own hands that you can eat later is a nice way to cut back on your grocery bill, as well as have a tasty treat once your corn has reached maturity.

Things You'll Need

  • A washtub or other large planter
  • Florescent lights
  • Potting soil rich in nutrients
  • Fertilizer
  • Corn seeds

      Choose an area of your house that is sunny.

      Place your tub or large planter in your chosen sunny location.

      Fill your planter with potting soil that is rich in nutrients and organic matter. Add fertilizer to the soil.

      Plant 4 to 5 corn seeds 1-inch deep in the soil with 4 to 5 inches space between each seed. Select a dwarf variety of corn such as Miniature Hybrid, Golden Midget or Early Sunglow.

      Add florescent lights so that they are as close to your corn plants as is possible, or in this case, the soil until the plants sprout. You should keep the florescent lighting on at all times. The more light your corn plants have the better they will do growing indoors.

      Water your corn seeds at least once a week. You know it's time to water your corn seeds when the top of the soil is dry.

      Once your corn plants are mature, harvest your corn and cook and eat it right after it's picked.
