Coat the bottom of a large pot with approximately two to three tablespoons of vegetable oil.
Pour the popping corn into the pot; use enough to cover the entire bottom of the pot.
Turn the stovetop on, with the burner reaching a medium to medium-high heat.
Listen for the first kernel to pop.
Place the lid on the pot.
Lift the pot slightly off the burner and begin shaking it over the flame, so as to prevent the popcorn from burning. For more tender popcorn, keep lid slightly tilted to allow steam to escape.
Shake the pot until you can no longer see or hear the popping corn popping.
Turn off the stovetop.
Remove the lid and pour the popcorn into a large bowl.
