Can Squirrels Eat Shelled Corn?

There are more than 365 species of squirrels. The smallest squirrels range from a mere 1 to 2 pounds and measure 14 to 21 inches long; the largest grow up to 3 pounds and measure as much as 29 inches long. Many varieties appreciate shelled corn.

    • Most squirrels are vegetarians, so their diet consists mainly of outdoor plants and elements, including nuts, fruits, twigs, pine cones, mushrooms, leaves and twigs. They also enjoy a variety of fruits, including oranges, apricots and apples.

    Lifespan

    • Generally, squirrels live up to 10 years. However, the gray squirrel has a slightly shorter lifespan. The main causes of death include predators and motor vehicles.

    • A squirrel uses its tail to maintain balance and avoid falling when maneuvering quickly. Squirrels also use their tails as a parachute if they fall and as a blanket that provides warmth.
