Located at the top of a cornstalk, the male "tassel" provides pollen to fertilize the fruiting female "ears" of corn. Corn is hybridized or "cross-bred" by planting two varieties in close proximity. Tassels are removed from the first variety so that it can be pollinated by only the second variety and not by itself. In large-scale planting operations, a machine may be used to remove tassels mechanically. Remaining tassels are then removed by hand using a simple procedure.
