Corn Seed Treatments

Seed treatments help protect corn against attack from soil-borne pathogens and reduce the risk of leaf spots, rust and seedling blight, a fungal disease that can cause the seed to rot and die. Sweet corn is at higher risk of attack than field corn, which is normally purchased already treated. Most corn seed treatment products are fungicides or insecticides, which are applied to the corn seed prior to planting. Fungicides primarily keep disease under control; insecticides control insect pests. Some treatments are a mixture of both.
  1. Foliar Spray Treatments

    • You can use a sprinkler irrigation system to disperse a foliar spray treatment.

      A foliar spray of pyraclostrobin and metconazole helps control leaf spots and rust. Start treatment while the corn is still disease-free, with repeated application every 7 days if it appears that disease is imminent. A spray of qols and arizole, either through ground or aerial spray or a sprinkler irrigation system, also protects against leaf spots and rust. Apply up to 30 days before harvest.

    Slurry Treatments

    • Slurry treatments help produce better corn.

      Slurry corn seed treatments include captan, carboxin and maneb, which are protective fungicides that help control the majority of soil-borne pathogens and are sold under many trade names. Successful control of these diseases results in better stands, stronger seedlings and higher yields. All fungicidal seed treatments are suitable for treatment of field corn; check labels on specific brand products for information about treating sweet corn.

    Kodiak

    • Kodiak contains bacteria that suppresses many disease organisms.

      Kodiak concentrate can be combined with a chemical seed treatment for increased protection. Kodiak contains bacteria that suppresses many disease organisms. After the combined treatment, the bacteria grows alongside the roots, maintaining protection throughout the growing season. The result is a stronger root system leading to more uniform stands and increased yields.
