Sweet Corn and Pollen Allergies

If you suffer from pollen allergies, reconsider which plants are choose for your yard and garden. Some plants, such as sweet corn, produce pollen that can remain in the yard, where it can cause a reaction.
  1. Allergies

    • Pollen allergies cause the body overreact to exposure from weeds, trees and plants, including sweet corn, according to "Hay Fever: The Complete Guide." This allergic reaction results in symptoms such as watering, itchy eyes, sneezing and a runny nose. Pollen allergies usually are seasonal.

    Management

    • The best way to prevent allergies is to avoid contact with the allergens that set them off. To avoid allergic reactions to sweet corn, do not plant it near the home. Treat allergic reactions with antihistamines, which will help block the symptoms of the reaction. Consult a doctor for the proper medication and application.

    Considerations

    • Sweet corn pollen is large compared with the size of most other pollens. Sweet corn pollen isn't transported long distances by wind, but rather tends to fall to earth near the plant that produces it. This makes it easier to avoid exposure by avoiding areas where it is planted.
