The Germination of Anasazi Sweet Corn

Anasazi sweet corn features multicolored kernels ranging from the traditional yellow to red and purple to white. When fully grown, the stalks sprout tufted, purple pollen buds. The taste is supposed to be earthy and sweeter than other sweet corn varieties. Even with all of its differences, growing Anasazi sweet corn doesn't differ much from growing other sweet corn varieties. Planting and germination are simple enough for children to try planting Anasazi corn in their own garden plots.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour enough soil into your seedling tray to fill each seedling well completely. Level off the soil with the side of your hand. Pick the tray up a few inches and drop it a few times to help the soil settle. Top off the seedling tray if necessary.

    • 2

Place a dried corn kernel in the center of each seedling well. Press them about ¼ inch into the soil with your finger, covering each seed completely. Water until the soil is totally saturated but not muddy. About a cup of water per every six seedling wells should do it.

    • 3

Set your seedling trays in a bright, sunny area. A windowsill that never drops below about 50 degrees Fahrenheit works well. Daytime temperatures should reach up to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. You should see sprouts in approximately three weeks.
