Depending on the climate of the growing region, corn should be planted in late spring or early summer. For a longer harvest, plant early growth varieties about two weeks before main season types to stagger the crop yield.
A soil fortified with vegetable-growing nutrients with lots of added nitrogen is the best for sweet corn. The soil should be loose and free of clumps to encourage fast and even growth.
Mix the fortified soil with compost, well-aged manure fertilizer and a 1-inch layer of freshly mowed grass clippings. If the soil lacks nitrogen, add soybean or alfalfa meal in proportions recommended on the packaging.
Corn thrives in warm temperatures with maximum exposure to the sun. If the climate is particularly dry and lacking in precipitation, water the soil regularly to keep it slightly moist.
