Black Knot Control in Plum Trees

Plum trees are susceptible to the black knot disease. Left uncontrolled, black knot can seriously damage trees.
  1. Cause

    • Black knot is a fungal disease caused by Dibotryon morbosum or Aplosporina morbosa. The fungal spores overwinter on the tree branches and twigs and start to produce fruiting bodies during spring.

    Symptoms

    • Initial symptoms of infection include small swells on twigs that gradually assume an elongated shape and start moving to larger branches. In early stages, these small swells or knots are green and soft. With time, they harden and turn black.

    Management

    • Prune infected trees 2 to 4 inches below the knots. Destroy severely infected trees entirely. Recommended fungicides for black knot include captan, benomyl and thiophanate methyl.
