Puna Cactus Species

Formerly known as the Puna genus, the Maihueniopsis genus consists of approximately 18 species of mat-forming, flowering cacti native to South America. A close relative of the nopales or paddle cactus genus (Opuntia spp.), members of the Maihueniopsis genus are sometimes referred to in plant nurseries as Opunti, Puna or Tephrocactus.
  1. Genus

    • Maihueniopsis plants are characterized by a tuberous root system, segmented stems and low-growing, round cushions. Plants typically produce yellow flowers, though some may have red, pink or white blooms. Cacti may have long, extended spines or short spines along the stems. Members of the genus may be found throughout South America from Peru to Chile and down to Argentina and Bolivia. Plants are often found in exposed, high-elevation areas.

    Maihuenopsis Subterranea

    • Maihuenopsis subterranea is a notable species that offers thin, bright green stems and large blooms that may be deep red, yellow or white in some instances. The Maihuenopsis subterranea cultivar "incahuasii" offers rich purple flowers. The cactus occurs naturally in a limited range on the border between Chile and Argentina. The plant may be grown in the home garden if given a deep pot with a well-draining cactus potting mix, full sunlight and good air circulation.

    Maihueniopsis Darwinii

    • A native of Chile and Argentina, Maihueniopsis darwinii is a fleshy, bright green species characterized by exceptionally stiff, sharp spines. According to Cactuspedia.com, the sharp spines of the cactus make the Maihueniopsis darwinii one of the most dangerous varieties of cacti. Caution should be used when growing this cactus in a household with pets or children. Other features include yellow cup-shaped blooms tinged with orange. The cactus is tolerant of light frosts, and dappled shade.

    Other Species

    • Other species in the Maihueniopsis genus include Maihueniopsis domeykoensis, a rare species native to Chile that boasts dense spines and flowers that may be red, orange or lemon yellow, and the more commonly available Maihueniopsis clavarioides, a cactus with flat pads, tiny spines and green or yellow flowers. Maihueniopsis bonnieae is a rare, rounded variety native to Argentina that produces showy white flowers or flowers tinged with pink or red.
