How to Repot a Kalanchoe Daigremontiana

Kalanchoe daigremontiana, or Mother of Thousands, is a member of the stonecrop family native to the mountains of Madagascar. This succulent forms tiny plantlets on the edges of its gray-green leaves instead of producing seeds. These small clones of the mother plant fall to the ground and grow quickly. Move the mother plant to a container only a couple of inches larger than its previous plant pot when repotting.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the container with soapy water and rinse with one part bleach mixed with nine parts water. This gets rid of plant disease and insect pest infestations. Let the container air dry so the soil does not stick to the sides of the plant pot.

    • 2

Mix together two parts potting soil, two parts sand and one part peat moss. This creates a quick-draining soil with a high amount of organic material to provide the plant with a source of slow-release nutrients.

    • 3

Fill the bottom inch of the container with rocks to help increase the drainage. Place 2 inches of soil on top of the rocks. Lay the Kalanchoe daigremontiana on its side. Roll the plant pot back and forth to loosen the sides. Set the container upright and remove the plant by pulling the plant up by the root ball.

    • 4

Place the Kalanchoe daigremontiana in the new container and adjust the height by adding or removing soil from beneath the root ball. Fill the pot with soil, leaving a 2-inch gap from the edge to catch water.

    • 5

Pour water into the top of the container until it runs out the bottom, and set on a plate to catch draining water. Place the Kalanchoe daigremontiana in a sunny location.
