How to Trim Yucca Elephantipes

Yucca elephantipes, also known as soft-tipped or spineless yucca, is a relative of the slower-growing agave. It is named for the shape and structure of its trunk, which resembles the foot of an elephant. The plant is evergreen and quickly reaches outdoor heights of 30 feet when growing wild, but may be smaller when cultivated. It has fragrant white flowers that are bell-shaped like other yuccas. Native to Guatemala and southern parts of Mexico, it grows well as a houseplant anywhere. To keep its size in check, trimming, or pruning, becomes necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim off any black spots or margins from older leaves. If too much of the leaf is black, which happens with age, remove the entire leaf from the plant.

    • 2

Trim off entire heads that display unattractive leaf spotting. Cut below the head, or down to the height you think is suitable. Decrease water until new leaves grow, as less foliage equals reduced water needs.

    • 3

Strip off lower leaves that appear to straggle from the main clump to keep your yucca neat.
