How to Grow Yucca Plants

Many people like to grow yucca plants indoors because they clean the air and are low maintenance. Yuccas are also used to enhance a home that is decorated in a southwestern theme. Different varieties are available which grow to different heights. Some can be planted outdoors after they grow too big for indoor spaces.

Purchase healthy yucca plants. Do not purchase a plant if the main plant stalk or cane wobbles in the dirt as this could show early signs of root rot. Avoid plants have a lot of yellow leaves.

    • 2

Place yuccas in or near a south-, west- or east-facing window. Yuccas prefer light and will do better in these locations.

    • 3

Allow the top half of the soil to dry before watering. Yuccas do not require a lot of water. Do not let the plant sit in water, which can cause mold and rot.

    • 4

Spray yuccas with a mixture of one part liquid dish detergent and 3 parts water in the event of mealybugs or scale. This does not harm the plant. Normally insects do not attack yuccas.

    • 5

Re-pot plants into one size larger pot as they outgrow their present pot. Yuccas do better when they are potted without a lot of space.
