How to Transplant A Cactus Without Getting Thorned

Transplanting cactus can create a thorny problem -- literally. You can dramatically reduce the number of thorn pricks you would normally get when transplanting your cactus by adjusting your tactics. Time your transplanting to when the cactus is due to be watered.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear leather gloves to transplant cactus with large thorns. If you've transplanted many types of cactus, you know that even leather gloves do not protect against some cactus's thorns.

    • 2

Grasp the cactus with a pair of hot dog tongs or surrounded it with a rolled-up newspaper.

    • 3

Set up a pot one size larger and fill it with cactus mix and extra sand. Carefully lower the cactus into the container and scoop the planting mix over the roots with a trowel.

    • 4

Water the cactus thoroughly. Do not add more water until the pot becomes completely dry.
