How to Start an Aloe Vera Plant

Aloe vera is a succulent with useful medicinal properties. Inside the aloe plant is a gel that can be used to heal cuts, scrapes, stings and other minor skin irritations. Although aloe can be started from seeds, you will get much quicker results using a starter from a mother plant.

Instructions

  Cut a pup away from a mother plant. Pups are little mini aloes that grow up around the main plant. They often have their own roots but are still attached to the main plant.

  Put the pup in a cool, dry place for at least two days to allow the cut to heal.

  Fill a pot at least two-thirds full with cactus potting soil.

  If the pup has roots, bury the roots in the soil. Water your aloe immediately. Thereafter, water it once every one to two weeks.

  If the pup does not have roots, place it in the pot on top of the soil, but do not bury it. Prop the plant up so that the cut end sits against the soil.

  Lightly mist the plant, but do not pour water on the soil. Continue to mist it once every three days.

  When the aloe appears to be growing and looks like it has rooted into the ground, start watering it like any other plant. This may take up to a month, so be patient.
