Choose a container that has draining holes that are at least an inch in diameter. Mix two parts planting soil with one part vermiculite. Fill your container, but allow a 1/2 inch at the top. Place your Easter cactus in the container.
Pack the soil tightly around the cactus to prevent air pockets. Water thoroughly and place on a saucer. Avoid water build up in the saucer by holding the plant for a few minutes so that the water can pass through the soil and out of the draining holes. Refrain from watering your cactus when soil is still moist. Allow for the soil to dry in between weekly watering.
Fertilize your cactus monthly when you start to see new growth. Dilute 1/4 soluble fertilizer that has a NPK of 20-20-20 with 3/4 water. Water the cactus with fertilizer.
Place your cactus by a window that gets partial shade. Place blinds or a light curtain in front of the window to reduce sunlight. Easter cacti thrive in cool temperatures of 55 to 65 F.
Prepare you cactus for blooming by placing the cactus in a closet for 12 hours each night for 8 weeks. Easter cacti generally start developing buds in February.
Place your cactus in a brighter room after it has started blooming. Blooms will last from April to May as long as their room temperature doesn't go below 60 F.
