Tillandsia plants don't have typical roots. They have thin roots which support the plant when clinging to a surface. The leaves turn a bright color when the plant blooms. The flowers are spikes which rise from the center of the plant. The colors include blue, purple, red, orange or white.
Since tillandsia plants don't have a root system, they have evolved a method for absorbing water and nutrients from the environment, through its leaves. Tiny silver scales covering the plant absorb water.
Tillandsia plants can survive in temperatures between 32 degrees F and 100 degrees F. The atmospheric humidity levels should be moderate. In drier regions, more frequent watering is required.
Tillandsia plants produce offshoots called pups. Each pup can grow into a new tillandsia plant.
Keep tillandsia plants in indirect light and spray a mist of water 2 to 3 times a week. Once a week, the plant should be placed outdoors for 24 hours.
