Characteristics of Air Plants

Air plant is the common name for the tillandsia plant, a species that lives and grows without soil. They survive by clinging to another plant. This type of plant is called an epiphyte.
  1. Description

    • Tillandsia plants don't have typical roots. They have thin roots which support the plant when clinging to a surface. The leaves turn a bright color when the plant blooms. The flowers are spikes which rise from the center of the plant. The colors include blue, purple, red, orange or white.

    Acquiring Water

    • Since tillandsia plants don't have a root system, they have evolved a method for absorbing water and nutrients from the environment, through its leaves. Tiny silver scales covering the plant absorb water.

    Climate

    • Tillandsia plants can survive in temperatures between 32 degrees F and 100 degrees F. The atmospheric humidity levels should be moderate. In drier regions, more frequent watering is required.

    Reproduction

    • Tillandsia plants produce offshoots called pups. Each pup can grow into a new tillandsia plant.

    Care

    • Keep tillandsia plants in indirect light and spray a mist of water 2 to 3 times a week. Once a week, the plant should be placed outdoors for 24 hours.
