Why Do My Kalanchoe Flapjack Leaves Have Brown Spots?

Kalanchoe flapjack is a type of succulent plant with broad, flat green leaves that display a red tip. The plant's leaves could have brown spots from two plant diseases: edema and leaf spot.

  1. Edema

    • Edema is a disease that causes brownish or rust-colored spots to appear on kalanchoe plant leaves. This disease is cosmetic and not dangerous to the plant's health.

    Leaf Spot

    • Leaf spot is a disease that can be caused by either fungus or bacteria. Wet or moist weather promotes the growth of fungus and bacteria that can lead to leaf spot.

    Tip

    • Brown spots will not go away once they have developed, so leaves that show them must be removed.

    Chemical Treatment

    • Fungicide can treat leaf spot. Your county extension office will have inormation on whether certain fungicides are approved for home use in your area.

    Natural Treatment

    • Moisture content of soil can be reduced by allowing it to dry out thoroughly and, afterward, directing water toward the soil and avoiding getting water on the kalanchoe plant's leaves.

    Weather

    • Cold and humid weather may cause edema. Warmer weather and shielding from humidity can protect the kalanchoe plant.
