The jade plant is suitable as a house plant, landscape plant and bonsai. The slow growth habit of this plant and the fact it is a succulent makes it a plant for beginners and those with limited space or limited water resources.

      The jade plant is native to South Africa. In its natural environment it grows in the shape of a tree that can reach about 16 1/2 feet, while when placed in landscaping it grows to about 6 1/2 feet. This type of landscape design is called xeriscaping and can be found in dry areas such as California.

    As a Houseplant

    • Jade plant is an easy houseplant for a beginner.

      Because the jade is a succulent, it grows only a few inches a year as a house plant. On average it grows to a height of 4 feet to 5 feet while under domestication.

      Jade plants make great bonsais, which are trees trained to remain miniature versions of what is in the wild. They can be trained through pruning to grow to heights from a few inches up to 1 foot.
