Aloe plants need soil that keeps their roots dry. The soil needs to drain quickly when the aloe plant is watered. Use sandy soil, which holds little moisture and improves air circulation around the roots.
A soil mixture with equal parts of potting soil, perlite and sand gives aloe plants needed nutrients and support. Another alternative is commercial cacti soil mixture, which is available in garden stores.
Soil for aloe plants has limited fertility. The best way to increase the soil's fertility is to replace the soil every year. Remove the aloe plant from the pot and shake off the old dirt. Replace the old dirt with new soil. Firm the plant in and do not water for 2 weeks.
