When Do Cactuses Flower?

Most cacti live in what we'd consider inhospitable areas of the world. Cactus plants are ideally adapted to periods of dry, hot weather. Cactus flowers are generally large and colorful with an unusual design and well worth the wait.
  1. Water

    • Although cactus plants have adapted to periods of drought, water is necessary for reproduction and flowers are their primary method of reproduction. Cacti tend to flower after periods of wet weather.

    Season

    • Deserts boast a wet and dry season. Rains generally begin in February and last to April. Cactus flowers bloom for only a brief period of time during these months, but the quality of their display is unequaled.

    Time

    • Many cactus, such as the saguaro, bear flowers that open at night and remain open until the day begins to warm. These flowers are pollinated by bats, according to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, and other night dwelling pollinators.

    Indoor Cactus

    • Many cacti, such as the Christmas cactus, are popular houseplants. These cactus require a period of dark weather, 12 hours per day, to simulate the winter months before blooms appear. Christmas cactus bloom at temperatures of 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Purdue University. These cactus flowers can bloom year round if these conditions are met, but they typically bloom from early November to December.
