What Is a Flower That Only Blooms at Night?

The night-blooming Cereus is a flower that blooms only at night. There are different types, or species, of this flower. Hylocereus undatus is probably the most common night-blooming cereus. Part of the cactus family, this plant is found throughout tropical America and is usually cultivated as a houseplant in the United States.
  1. Blooms

    • This climbing plant can appear somewhat spindly and unattractive -- until it blooms. The blooms on Hylocereus undatus (sometimes called Queen of the Night) are stunning. Creamy-white in color, they open to a width of up to 12 inches and length of 14 inches. The flowers are not only showy, but very fragrant as well.

    Timing

    • The blooms only open at night and last until morning. Soon after sunrise, the flowers droop and die. The buds, which grow along the stems, visibly swell as they get ready to bloom. Blooming can occur any time between July and September. Check the buds each night before you go to bed. If the flower is going to bloom, the bud will begin to open around 9 or 10 p.m., according to the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension, with the flower finally opening fully around midnight.

    Growing Season

    • Cereus plants thrive in a sandy planting medium similar or the same as used for cacti. The mixture should be well-draining, but kept moist during the growing season (spring through fall). Cereus plants grow best in bright but indirect sunlight and consistently warm temperatures. They should also be fertilized with a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer once a month while blooming.

    Resting Period

    • Allow Cereus plants to rest during the fall and winter, as this will allow the plants to store up nutrients for blooming in the spring. Let the soil dry out between waterings during this time, and stop fertilizing. Place the plant where it will be exposed to cool nighttime temperatures of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Resume watering and fertilizing sometime in March. Blooming should begin about two months after that.
