How to Grow Dragon Fruit Cactus Cuttings

Dragon fruit cacti, or pitaya, grow as a tall vining cactus in tropical and subtropical areas. The cactus produces red flowers that later develop into fruits. The edible fruits have white or yellow flesh flecked with small black seeds. Dragon fruits grow readily from cuttings. These pieces of stem produce their own root system and grow into a new plant that is a clone of the mother plant the cutting came from. The cuttings root readily and reach maturity quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 6- to 15-inch section from the tip of the dragon fruit's new growth, using a sharp knife. Make the cut at a 45-degree angle through the stem connecting two sections together.

    • 2

Coat the cut end of the stem with a fungicidal powder formulated for cactus plants. Set the cutting in a well-ventilated, shaded area to dry for one week.

    • 3

Mix together equal parts fine-milled peat and vermiculite. Moisten the mixture and place it in a 6-inch-diameter pot. Use a pot with bottom drainage holes.

    • 4

Dip the cut end of the cutting into a rooting hormone. Insert the cut end into the potting mixture until it stands upright on its own.

    • 5

Set the pot in an area that receives bright sunlight. Water the potting mixture when the surface of the mix begins to feel dry. Cuttings root within two to four weeks.
