How to Dry Cactus

Although cactus is known primarily for its ability to store water and it overall lack of water needs, the plant blooms best when it goes through a dry period. For example, Christmas cactus needs warm, moist conditions during the late spring and summer, and cool, dry conditions in the fall and early winter to trigger a dormancy that stores energy for the plant to bloom. While letting the cactus dry for dormancy is a simple process, it takes several weeks.

Instructions

    • 1

Cease normal waterings for the cactus.

    • 2

Move the plant to a dark, cool location --- such as a closet or garage --- for 12 to 15 hours each night over the next six to eight weeks. Start the dark treatments in early November so the plant will bloom by Christmas.

    • 3

Mist the plant with room temperature water, or add water sparingly if the plant begins to wilt.

    • 4

Move the plant to a sunny, warmer location when buds start to form on the plant.

    • 5

Resume normal waterings until the top 1 inch of potting soil is wet. The exact amount and frequency of watering will depend upon the size of the plant, humidity levels and amount of light exposure the plant receives.
