How to Grow Succulents Vertically

Succulents have shallow root systems, which makes them ideal for vertical planters. Choose a variety of colors, sizes, textures and shapes to make a vertical arrangement, then get creative. Succulents planted in vertical containers need more water than those planted in pots or in the ground because they dry out faster. Keep planters outside to maximize light but know that vertical planters in temperate climates may need to come indoors for the winter.

Instructions

  1. Using Vertical Planters

    • 1

Fill a vertical planter with a cactus potting soil, which offers more drainage than standard potting soil.

    • 2

Remove your succulent plants from their containers. Shake loose the soil from their roots.

    • 3

Push the plants into the wire mesh on your vertical planter, working one plant at a time.

    • 4

Add all succulent plants to the vertical planter like this. Vary the spacing, size and color of the plants to create a pattern you like.

    • 5

Suspend the planter from a nail, plant hook or other hanging device once it is planted, choosing a full sun location. Vertical planters have hooks on the back for convenient display.

    • 6

Mist the plants with water from a hose or spray bottle to water them. Allow the soil to dry out, then rewet using this technique.

    Creating a Planter

    • 7

Remove the succulent plants from their containers and again shake loose excess soil.

    • 8

Cut 10- to 12-inch circles from mesh screen, making one circle for each succulent plant.

    • 9

Place a thin layer of sheet moss on each circle, followed by a small amount of cactus potting soil. Add enough soil so that you'll have a 3-inch bundle when you close the circle.

    • 10

Place one succulent on each circle you cut, reserving larger circles for larger plants. Gather the edges of the circle around the plant so that the roots dangle in the soil mix, then secure the circle around the plant with twine or floral wire. Prepare all plants like this.

    • 11

Push the succulent bundles into a metal frame, wooden trellis or other vertical display arrangement. Remove the bundles, and soak in water for up to 30 minutes to water or mist them with a hose.
