Care for the Lollipop Cactus

The popular lollipop cactus sold in stores is not a naturally occurring plant at all, but a graft of the bright-red ruby ball cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichiicactus) onto a base of a cactus from the Hylocereus family. Other colors occasionally found are yellow or orange. The lollipop cactus is interesting and attractive, but does not usually live long and should be considered a novelty plant. There are some growing tips that will prolong the life of your lollipop cactus, however.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the lollipop cactus warm. Temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit are required for best color.

    • 2

Place the lollipop cactus in a well-lit area, such as near a window, but protect from very intense, direct sun. Unlike most cacti, the lollipop does best in bright, but indirect light.

    • 3

Allow the potting soil to dry completely before watering. Then drench thoroughly. Watering too frequently will rot the cactus base.

    • 4

Fertilize once a month with cactus fertilizer, or all-purpose fertilizer that has been diluted with water by half.
