How to Care for Cactus Dish Gardens

A cactus dish garden is often a mixture of succulents and cacti. Instead of planting in a pot, plant the garden in a shallow dish, about two or three inches deep. Garden centers sell cactus potting mixture, which you should use instead of standard potting soil when assembling the garden. If you don't have cactus potting mix, make your own by combining an equal amount standard potting mix with sand.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cactus dish garden in a sunny location where it will get plenty of light.

    • 2

Bring the dish garden indoors and place in a sunny location during the winter months, as the plants do not tolerate freezing weather, or keep them indoors year round.

    • 3

Water the garden when the soil completely dries, or when the top 1/2 inch of the soil is dry to the touch, during the growing season, which is spring and summer. Use room temperature water and water to moisten the soil, not drench. During the dormant season, winter and fall, only water about two times a month.
