How to Cover a Cactus From Frost and Snow

Cacti plants are succulents that thrive in hot and dry climates. They are highly susceptible to damage if exposed to temperatures below freezing or snowfall. To ensure survival during these times, cover a cactus to limit its exposure to snow and frost. Frost fleece is a lightweight, breathable fabric that will provide a layer of insulation between the harsh cold and the fleshy stems of the cactus plant. Cover the plants before the temperatures dip below freezing.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive three to four wooden stakes into the ground around your cactus plant. Position the stakes at least 12 inches away from the base of the plant. Use a sledgehammer to drive the stake 6 inches into the ground. The top of the stake should remain at least 4 inches above the tallest portion of the cactus.

    • 2

Drape frost fleece over the top of the stakes around the cactus. Pull the sides of the fleece down the stakes to the ground, covering the cactus completely. Pull on the fleece so that the top is taught and isn't touching the plant.

Place large rocks on the edges of the fabric on the ground to anchor it and keep it from blowing off the stakes. Make sure all edges are anchored to the ground so that there are no openings. This will prevent cold air from blowing inside the covering.

Remove the covering during daylight hours only when the temperature is above freezing. This will allow the cactus to receive sunlight and ventilation. Place the fleece over the cactus and seal the edges when the temperature begins to drop.
