How to Grow Schlumbergera Truncata Harmony

Schlumbergera truncata "Harmony" is the botanical name for a variety of cactus sometimes called a Thanksgiving cactus. It derives its common name from the colorful red or orange blooms it produces around the Thanksgiving holiday. The plant has thick leaves with deeply serrated edges and grows from 6 to 12 inches tall. The Harmony cactus requires indirect sunlight, well-drained soil and temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit. A period of extended darkness is necessary to stimulate flower production.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a 4- to 6-inch planter with at least two drainage holes in the bottom.

    • 2

Fill the planter three-quarters of the way with orchid potting mix.

    • 3

Plant Schlumbergera truncata "Harmony" at its original level and lightly moisten the potting mix.

    • 4

Move the planter to a spot that receives indirect bright sunlight most of the day.

    • 5

Water lightly when the potting mix feels completely dry to the touch.

    • 6

Place the planter in a completely dark location from 6 p.m. until 8 a.m., beginning in September, to stimulate bloom development. Continue to keep the plant in a dark location for this period of time each day until the bloom cycle is complete.

    • 7

Feed with liquid houseplant fertilizer, at the recommended rate and frequency, after the first bud develops. Continue to fertilize in this manner until all blooms have faded.

    • 8

Move Schlumberger truncata "Harmony" to a larger planter filled with fresh potting mix when it outgrows available space.
