Do Blueberries Need Support?

Blueberry plants are hardy, strong bushes that grow upright and vigorously when they're planted under the right growing conditions. Healthy blueberry plants do not require external support to grow to maturity.
  1. Planting Blueberries

    • Blueberries are grown from bushes or shoots, and they begin growing upright from the time they're planted. Make sure that your blueberry plants are upright when you place them in the soil to encourage continued upright growth.

    Mature Bushes

    • Mature blueberry bushes have trunks and branches that keep them upright, along with a broad lower portion that balances the plant. External supports are not necessary to keep a blueberry plant growing unless it has been severely pruned on one side, as to remove diseased portions of the bush.

    Considerations

    • Blueberries grow best in deep and well-drained soil that supports their root systems. After planting your blueberries, saturate the soil with water and allow it to drain before tamping down the soil to keep the blueberry bush growing sturdily.
