How Big Does a Blueberry Plant Get?

Lowbush and highbush blueberries are native to North America. Healthy blueberry plants grow vigorously to heights taller than an average adult. The University of Maine extension service advises that a gardener should purchase healthy two- or three-year-old plants from a reputable source when starting a blueberry bed. The plants need a good start to reach their height and fruit-bearing potential.
  1. New Plants

    • Blueray, Bluecrop, Meader and Jersey are a few of the highbush blueberry plants that grow 5-to-8-feet tall in Maine and other Northeast states. The Patriot, listed as a short blueberry plant, grow 4 to 6 feet high. Bluegold, a midseason fruit-bearing lowbush blueberry plant, reaches a 4-foot height. The St. Cloud, a midseason plant, grows up to 4 feet tall and spreads nearly as wide as it is tall.

    Southern Blueberries

    • Trimming or pruning blueberry bushes every year after the third year in the garden promotes growth and increases fruit production. Pruning is not done to reduce the height of the plant. Pruning old, discolored canes; low-growing, weak shoots; or dead branches during dormant periods in winter and early spring strengthens the plant. Prune canes that are 6 years old or older low to the ground for new growth to respond.
