Blueberry Plant Facts

Blueberry plants are easy to care for. They can be used as a hedge, a backdrop in landscaping or solely as an addition to the garden. Since blueberry plants require cross-pollination, at least two varieties should be planted together.
  1. Planting

    • The plants should be planted in a hole that is at least 18 inches deep and 18 inches wide. Blueberry plants grow as a bush, so they should be spaced at least five feet apart.

    Mulch

    • Blueberry plants enjoy acidic soil. When adding fertilizer to the plants, use acidic mulch such as pine needles or bark, or oak leaves.

    Production

    • Blueberry plants begin producing fruit after three years. They reach their full production performance by six years.

    Disease Control

    • Blueberry plants are very hardy and have little problem with disease. However, caterpillars occasionally make their home in the plants. This issue can easily be resolved by using a product that contains Bt (Bacillus thurigenesis).

    Maintanence

    • Blueberry plants require very little attention. They grow in sandy, well-drained soil. The plants are drought resistant and thrive in full sun.

    Pruning

    • The plants should not be pruned until they are three years old. When pruning, cuts should be made flush with the limb.
