How to Identify Wild Blueberries of Florida

Blueberry bushes are popular both for their fruit and for their beauty. They produce fruit during the summer and flame-red foliage in the fall. These bushes can be combined with other "border" plants to create landscaping in your yard. People plant these bushes to harvest and present homegrown fruit to their guests, and to enjoy the fruit themselves. Blueberries are hardy enough that they can quite easily grow in the wild, especially in warm areas like Florida, where wild blueberries are likely to be found anywhere in the state. Look for wild blueberries of the rabbiteye and highbush variety in Florida, in both the swamps and forests.

Instructions

    • 1

Look for the right site: blueberries are most likely to grow in areas where they get full sunshine. Although they can grow in the shade, they will thrive in nature in sunny spots. These wild plants can be found in almost every part of Florida.

Look for blueberries in Florida during the summer months. They will show in groups of 5 to 10 dusky blue berries on the bush.

    • 3

Look for flame red foliage in the fall, when blueberry bushes traditionally change color.

    • 4

At other times of the year, look for a blueberry bush's trademark foliage: deep green, glossy leaves growing along long stems.

    • 5

Since highbush blueberries are the most common wild strain in Florida, look for blueberry bushes that are 5 to 9 feet tall, and well established (they can live for up to 50 years).
