Is There an Evergreen Blueberry Plant?

Botanists do not formerly distinguish between blueberries and huckleberries. The evergreen blueberry is commonly called the evergreen huckleberry, which is an American corruption of the British "whortleberry."
  1. Leaves

    • Evergreen blueberry plants retain their leaves year round and have thick, leathery leaves with small, sharp teeth; the leaves are elliptic and shiny.

    Berries

    • Evergreen berries range from black with no bloom in the Pacific Northwest, to blue in Texas, and ripen in late October or early November.

    Flowers

    • Flowers range in color from small, white, waxy, bell-shaped flowers to pinkish-white or red blooms.

    Location

    • Native evergreen blueberry plants grow from the pinelands to the forest floor; growing throughout the United States from the Atlantic Coast (Florida and North Carolina) to the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and California).

    Varieties

    • Varieties of evergreen blueberry plants include the evergreen blueberry or California huckleberry (Vassinium ovatum), Darrow evergreen blueberry (Vassinium darrowii), and Creeping blueberry (V. crassifolium: native to only four states in the southeast).
