Blueberry Plant Identification

The blueberry belongs to the family Ericaceaa. You identify blueberry patches by noting the distinctive twigs and characteristic leaves. Berries ripen between July and October and vary in taste depending upon species and location.
  1. Location

    • The blueberry bush ranges in height from a few inches to 10 feet and populates areas as diverse as swamps and bogs to dry woods and thickets.

    Flowers

    • Flowers bloom in spring or early summer; bloom colors include bronze, red, pinkish-white, greenish-white and white, with variations in between. The petals merge to form a bell-shaped flower.

    Leaves

    • Most species have deciduous leaves, while one retains leaves all year round (evergreen). All species of blueberry plants have an alternate arrangement of elliptical leaves.

    Branches

    • Twigs are slender, reddish or greenish in color, and covered with raised warts.

    Fruit

    • Berries range in color from bright red to powder blue to blue-black and purple, ranging in size from less than pea-sized to twice pea-sized. Where the petals attach, ripe berries have a circular scar, or flat spot, located opposite the stem.

Blueberry fruits are edible, and flavors range from sour to sweet, depending upon variety.
