How to Plant Blueberry Bushes in Pennsylvania

Blueberry bushes are edible plants that are extremely easy to care for. In fact, if they are planted in the right location and receive adequate rainfall, very little additional care is needed. The bushes produce flowers in the spring which transform into succulent, dark blue berries in the mid-summer months. In Pennsylvania, blueberry bushes should be planted in the spring after the threat of frost passes. It usually takes two to three growing seasons before a blueberry bush produces fruit.

Instructions

    • 1

Select an outdoor location that is in full sunlight and that has well-drained soil.

    • 2

Test the acidity of the soil in the area using a soil-test kit. Place soil into the test tube per the manufacturer's instructions and fill it with distilled water. Insert the tablet from the kit into the tube and wait until the water becomes colored. Compare the color of the water with the test kit to determine the acidity of the soil.

    • 3

Increase the acidity of the soil, if it is outside the 4.0 to 4.5 range. To do this, pour a 1 to 2-inch layer of organic matter, such as compost, onto the top of the soil and mix it in well using a garden tiller.

    • 4

Dig a hole with a shovel that is deep enough to accommodate the root ball of the blueberry plant. Place the plant into the hole and cover the roots with soil. Plant all remaining blueberry bushes in the same manner, spacing each bush 5 feet away from the others.

    • 5

Place a 2 to 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the bottom of the blueberry bush to help retain moisture near the plant's roots.

    • 6

Water the blueberry bush with water until the ground is thoroughly moist. Keep the ground moist for the first two to three weeks to help the plant get established. After this time period, normal Pennsylvania rainfall will provide enough moisture for the plant.

    • 7

Fertilize the bush in late summer using a granular fertilizer that is spread around the soil at the base of the blueberry bushes.
