How to Cover Blueberry Bushes

Blueberries are native to North America but were not cultivated as a crop until the 20th century. Most blueberries grew wild and were smaller than the large, plump varieties seen in grocery stores today. Highbush blueberries are related to the cranberry and azalea plants. They tolerate colder weather, but generally nothing below minus 25 degrees F. Birds are the most common blueberry pest, but there are others--rabbits, skunks, turkeys and chipmunks. Deer can also do damage to blueberry bushes as they enjoy eating the leaves and bark. If you are not willing to share, cover the blueberry bushes to protect them from thievery.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a netting bag over the blueberry bush. You may need two people to do this. Tie the netting to the bush in a variety of places to make sure it is secure; it shouldn't move a lot once in place.

    • 2

Drape a sheet of netting over the bushes. Birds will rarely fly up under it. You can drape it over one or more bushes, depending on the length you choose, like a tarp, and anchor it to the ground with tent stakes and string or to neighboring trees.

Lay thin row covers made of woven polyester material or cotton over your berry bushes at night. Row covers are large sheets of material placed over plants to protect them from animal marauders and inclement weather. You can also use old bedsheets. This will discourage birds from getting at your berries early in the morning. You can remove the covers later in the morning for picking and then replace them later. This is a more labor intensive method, but if you already have row covers or sheets, it will be less expensive than purchasing netting.
