The Best Blueberry Plants for East Texas

Blueberries, which require acidic soil, grow well in East Texas, which is the area east of Interstate 45 to the Louisiana border, north to the Oklahoma border and south to Galveston Bay. In U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7b through 9a, winter lows can reach 5 degrees Fahrenheit in zone 7b. Both Dallas (zone 8a) and Houston (zone 9a) are in this region. Rabbiteye and southern highbush varieties grow best in this area.
  1. Tifblue

    • A rabbiteye variety, 'Tifblue' blueberries thrive in East Texas, producing firm, flavorful blueberries from May through early July. These plants are vigorous, upright growers and the berries often sold commercially. They are hardier than other rabbiteyes, according to AggieHorticulture.com, and require little pruning. This variety is self-fruitful and requires 550-600 hours of chill time.

    Brightwell

    • A cross between the 'Tifblue' and 'Menditoo' cultivars, 'Brightwell' blueberries require 350-400 hours of chill time, making them a good selection for all parts of East Texas. An upright grower, 'Brightwell' produces berries that are medium to large, light blue, firm and have good flavor with low acidity. Fruit should be ready for harvest as early as May.

    Reveille

    • 'Reveille' is a southern highbush variety, which is hardy in zones 7 to 10, making it a good choice for all of East Texas. 'Reveille' has a minimum chill requirement of 600 hours, according to the NCGR Catalog. The plant is narrow and upright and grows to 6 feet. Fruit is firm, medium and blue with good flavor.
