The Best Time to Transplant Blueberry Bushes

Blueberry bushes can provide years of enjoyment and ample fruit production each year. The bushes make a perfect specimen shrub with their white or pink springtime blossoms. Blueberry bushes transplant easily in full sunlight with a soil pH of 4.5 to 5.5.
  1. Time Frame

    • Transplant blueberry bushes that are two to three years old and measure 12 to 36 inches in height for best success, according to North Carolina State University. Plant bareroot plants in February and March. Plant in November and December in the Southeastern United States. Potted plants should be transplanted in November and December, as well.

    Planting Considerations

    • Always plant the blueberry bushes at the same level as they were planted previously or as they were planted in their nursery containers. Consider planting blueberry bushes in a large container, such as a whiskey barrel, for northern highbush blueberries, according to Oregon State University. Blueberry bushes can successfully be grown in containers for years.

    After Planting Care

    • Prune back the blueberry bush 30 to 40 percent right after planting and remove all dead wood. Apply approximately 3 inches of mulch around the base of the bush at the time of planting to help retain soil moisture and keep weeds at bay. Refrain from fertilizing the blueberry bush until new growth appears.
