According to the Louisiana State University Ag Center, rabbiteye blueberries (Vaccinium ashei) are the best variety for Louisiana growing. Plant the blueberries in areas that get full sun for at least half the day; the bushes can be planted in partial shade in this warm area.
Blueberries require a fall or winter planting, to give them a full season to take root and grow before the heat of summer. Plant blueberries after the first frost in the area, which may occur from the end of October to mid-November in southern parts of Louisiana.
Transplanting or planting blueberry bushes can be stressful for the plant, as the roots are exposed to both heat and air during the process. Successful gardeners choose a cool, overcast day for the planting, to keep roots from taking any damage. Planting in the morning is also advantageous.
