The Best Blueberry Bush to Grow in Kansas

Blueberries are relatively hardy fruit plants that survive winter temperatures well below freezing. In Kansas, which features U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 and 6, gardeners should choose the hardier varieties of blueberries and give them the right planting location.
  1. Varieties

    • Blueberries grow in low-bush, highbush and rabbiteye varieties, each with its own set of characteristics. Both Missouri State University and Kansas State University recommend highbush varieties for the growing conditions found in Kansas, as highbush blueberries are hardier and produce a larger fruit yield.

    Characteristics

    • Highbush blueberries grow to heights of 5 to 10 feet with the right care and produce large, sweet blueberries for jams, pies, tarts and raw snacks.

    Growing Needs

    • All blueberries require wide-open sites that receive full sun at all times. This is especially important in Kansas, where the growing season is short and winters are cold. Blueberries do best in slightly acidic soil that gets good drainage; they require frequent irrigation.
